At First National Real Estate Moss Vale, we are proud to be part of a community that comes together each year to commemorate ANZAC Day with deep respect and reflection. This important national day, observed on April 25, honours the bravery, service, and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs), as well as all those who have served in our armed forces.

If you’re living in or visiting the Southern Highlands, there are several meaningful ways to mark ANZAC Day. From dawn services to community events, here’s how you can get involved and pay your respects.

Dawn Services Across the Region

One of the most significant ANZAC Day traditions is the Dawn Service—a quiet, solemn ceremony held just before sunrise. These services are a powerful way to experience the spirit of ANZAC in a reflective setting.

Here are some key locations where dawn services are typically held in the Highlands:

  • Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch – Dawn Service at Monument Corner (Argyle Street & Waite Street): Arrive by 5:45am for the service, which begins around 6:00am.
  • Bowral War Memorial: A well-attended dawn service in the heart of Bowral, bringing together people of all ages.
  • Mittagong RSL – Service and Breakfast: After the dawn service at the Mittagong Cenotaph, many community members gather at the RSL Club for a traditional ANZAC Day breakfast.

Be sure to arrive early and dress warmly—it can be brisk in the Highlands this time of year.

Community Marches and Mid-Morning Services

If you can’t make it to a dawn service, most towns in the Southern Highlands also host mid-morning marches and commemorative services:

  • Moss Vale March: The march usually begins around 10:30am, followed by a service at the war memorial.
  • Robertson, Bundanoon, and Exeter: Smaller villages also hold marches and gatherings, fostering a strong community spirit and keeping local history alive.

These events are family-friendly and a great opportunity for children to learn about Australia’s military history in a respectful environment.

Ways to Participate from Home

For those who can’t attend a public event, there are still plenty of ways to observe the day from home:

  • Light up the dawn: Stand in your driveway, balcony or garden at 6:00am with a candle or light in honour of the ANZACs.
  • Watch a televised service: The ABC broadcasts the national service live each year.
  • Bake ANZAC biscuits: Share a batch with family or neighbours—this simple tradition is a sweet way to honour the past.
  • Explore local history: Visit the Southern Highlands’ war memorials or browse local archives to learn more about the region’s connection to the ANZAC story.

A Day to Reflect and Connect

ANZAC Day is a chance for all of us to pause and reflect on the values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice. It’s also an opportunity to strengthen our connection with our community, our history, and each other.

If you’re new to the area or planning a move to the Southern Highlands, days like ANZAC Day highlight just how close-knit and community-focused our towns and villages are. At First National Real Estate Moss Vale, we’re always here to help you find your place in this wonderful region.
